Patterns in Life: Diversity and Classification
Topic: Kingdom Plantae – Multicellular Autotrophs
Chapter 12. Patterns in Life: Diversity and Classification
This section explains Kingdom Plantae, which includes multicellular, autotrophic eukaryotic organisms. It also describes the five major groups of plants—Thallophyta, Bryophyta, Pteridophyta, Gymnosperms and Angiosperms—and explains how plants gradually evolved adaptations for life on land.
Kingdom Plantae – Multicellular Autotrophs
Introduction
Kingdom Plantae consists of multicellular, eukaryotic organisms that prepare their own food by photosynthesis. Their cells possess a cellulose cell wall and chlorophyll-containing chloroplasts. Plants form the base of most food chains and continuously release oxygen, making life on Earth possible.
Characteristics of Kingdom Plantae
- Multicellular and eukaryotic.
- Autotrophic mode of nutrition.
- Contain chlorophyll for photosynthesis.
- Cell wall made of cellulose.
- Usually fixed at one place.
- Store food mainly in the form of starch.
- Play an important role in maintaining ecological balance.
Major Groups of Plants
1. Thallophyta (Primitive Plants)
Thallophytes are the simplest plants. Their body is not differentiated into true roots, stems or leaves and is called a thallus. They are mostly found in water or moist places. Spirogyra is a common example.
Characteristics
- Simple thallus body.
- No true roots, stems or leaves.
- Mostly aquatic.
- Absorb water and nutrients directly.
2. Bryophyta (First Land Plants)
Bryophytes represent the first successful plants to live on land. They possess root-like structures called rhizoids and simple stem-like and leaf-like structures. However, they still require water for reproduction and are therefore called the amphibians of the plant kingdom. Marchantia and Moss are common examples.
Characteristics
- Grow in moist and shady places.
- Have rhizoids instead of true roots.
- Lack vascular tissues.
- Require water for reproduction.
3. Pteridophyta (First Vascular Plants)
Pteridophytes possess true roots, stems and leaves. They also have specialised vascular tissues (xylem and phloem) for transporting water and food. They reproduce through spores and do not produce seeds. Ferns are common examples.
Characteristics
- True roots, stems and leaves.
- Well-developed vascular tissues.
- Reproduce through spores.
- Require water for fertilisation.
4. Gymnosperms (Naked Seed Plants)
Gymnosperms are seed-producing plants adapted to cold and dry conditions. Their seeds are not enclosed within fruits but remain exposed on cones. Pine and Cycas are common examples.
Characteristics
- Produce naked seeds.
- Seeds develop on cones.
- Needle-like or scale-like leaves reduce water loss.
- Do not require water for fertilisation.
5. Angiosperms (Flowering Plants)
Angiosperms are the most advanced and diverse group of plants. They produce flowers and fruits, which help in efficient pollination, seed formation and seed dispersal. They occupy almost every type of habitat on Earth.
Characteristics
- Produce flowers.
- Seeds enclosed within fruits.
- Most diverse group of plants.
- Efficient pollination and seed dispersal.
- Adapted to a wide range of environments.
Comparison of Major Plant Groups
| Plant Group | Roots, Stem & Leaves | Vascular Tissue | Seeds | Examples |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Thallophyta | Absent | Absent | No | Spirogyra |
| Bryophyta | Simple Structures | Absent | No | Moss, Marchantia |
| Pteridophyta | Present | Present | No | Fern |
| Gymnosperms | Present | Present | Naked Seeds | Pine, Cycas |
| Angiosperms | Present | Present | Seeds inside Fruits | Mango, Wheat, Rose |
Evolutionary Trend in Plants
- Simple body → Differentiated body.
- No vascular tissue → Well-developed vascular tissue.
- Spore reproduction → Seed reproduction.
- Dependence on water → Independence from water for fertilisation.
- Naked seeds → Seeds enclosed within fruits.
ATP Education Concept Builder
Kingdom Plantae shows a gradual evolutionary progression from simple aquatic thallophytes to highly advanced flowering plants. As plants evolved, they developed vascular tissues, seeds, flowers and fruits, enabling them to adapt successfully to life on land.
ATP Education Exam Booster
- Remember the sequence: Thallophyta → Bryophyta → Pteridophyta → Gymnosperms → Angiosperms.
- Know why bryophytes are called the amphibians of the plant kingdom.
- Differentiate between pteridophytes, gymnosperms and angiosperms.
- Remember the examples of each plant group.
- Understand the evolutionary adaptations from aquatic plants to flowering plants.
- CBSE competency-based questions often ask students to compare plant groups based on vascular tissues, seeds and methods of reproduction.
