Patterns in Life: Diversity and Classification
Topic: Kingdom Fungi – Nature Decomposers
Chapter 12. Patterns in Life: Diversity and Classification
This section explains Kingdom Fungi, the third eukaryotic kingdom in the Five Kingdom Classification. Fungi are heterotrophic organisms with chitinous cell walls. They obtain food by absorption, reproduce mainly through spores and play a vital role in decomposition, nutrient recycling and various industrial applications.
Kingdom Fungi – Nature's Decomposers
Introduction
Kingdom Fungi consists of eukaryotic organisms that cannot prepare their own food. They absorb nutrients from dead organic matter or living organisms. Most fungi are multicellular, but yeast is a well-known unicellular fungus. Their cell walls are made of chitin, which distinguishes them from plants.
Characteristics of Kingdom Fungi
- Eukaryotic organisms.
- Mostly multicellular (except yeast).
- Cell wall made of chitin.
- Heterotrophic mode of nutrition.
- Do not contain chlorophyll.
- Body consists of fine thread-like structures called hyphae.
- A network of hyphae forms the mycelium.
- Grow best in warm and moist conditions.
Habitat
- Dead and decaying organic matter.
- Moist soil.
- Tree trunks.
- Food materials.
- Living plants and animals.
Cell Structure
| Feature | Description |
|---|---|
| Cell Type | Eukaryotic |
| Organisation | Mostly Multicellular |
| Cell Wall | Present (Made of Chitin) |
| Chlorophyll | Absent |
| Nutrition | Heterotrophic |
Modes of Nutrition in Fungi
- Saprophytic – Obtain food from dead and decaying organic matter.
- Parasitic – Obtain food from living hosts and may cause diseases.
- Symbiotic – Live in mutual association with other organisms.
Reproduction in Fungi
Fungi reproduce both sexually and asexually. Asexual reproduction commonly occurs through the formation of spores, which germinate under favourable conditions to produce new fungi.
Examples of Kingdom Fungi
- Mushroom
- Yeast
- Aspergillus
- Penicillium
Importance of Fungi
- Act as natural decomposers.
- Recycle nutrients in ecosystems.
- Improve soil fertility.
- Used in the production of enzymes.
- Penicillium is used for producing antibiotics.
- Yeast is used in baking and fermentation.
- Edible mushrooms are nutritious food.
- Mushroom cultivation provides employment and livelihood.
Harmful Effects of Fungi
- Cause diseases in plants and animals.
- Spoil food materials.
- Some mushrooms are poisonous.
- Parasitic fungi reduce crop yield.
Ecological Importance of Fungi
| Role | Importance |
|---|---|
| Decomposer | Break down dead organic matter. |
| Nutrient Recycling | Return minerals to the soil. |
| Symbiosis | Form beneficial associations with other organisms. |
| Industry | Used in food, medicine and biotechnology. |
Summary of Kingdom Fungi
| Characteristic | Kingdom Fungi |
|---|---|
| Cell Type | Eukaryotic |
| Organisation | Mostly Multicellular |
| Cell Wall | Chitin |
| Nutrition | Heterotrophic (Absorptive) |
| Reproduction | Sexual and Asexual (Spores) |
| Examples | Mushroom, Yeast, Aspergillus, Penicillium |
ATP Education Concept Builder
Unlike plants, fungi cannot prepare their own food because they lack chlorophyll. Their unique chitin cell wall, absorptive mode of nutrition and role as decomposers make them indispensable for maintaining ecological balance. Without fungi, dead organic matter would accumulate and nutrient recycling would slow down considerably.
ATP Education Exam Booster
- Remember that fungi have chitin in their cell walls, not cellulose.
- Differentiate between saprophytic, parasitic and symbiotic nutrition.
- Know the structure and function of hyphae and mycelium.
- Learn the importance of spores in fungal reproduction.
- Remember the uses of yeast, Penicillium and edible mushrooms.
- CBSE competency-based questions often ask students to explain why fungi are called the natural recyclers of ecosystems and how they contribute to agriculture and industry.
