Chapter 12. Patterns in Life: Diversity and Classification

Scientists have developed different systems of classification over time as their understanding of living organisms increased. Improvements in scientific knowledge and technology led to the development of the modern Five Kingdom Classification, which groups organisms according to their cell type, level of organisation, nutrition and other important characteristics.

Development of Biological Classification

Evolution of Classification Systems

Scientist Contribution
Aristotle (4th Century BCE) Grouped animals according to their habitat (land, water and air) and external appearance.
Carolus Linnaeus (1758) Introduced the Two Kingdom Classification consisting of Plantae and Animalia.
Ernst Haeckel (1866) Added the third kingdom Protista for microscopic organisms.
Herbert F. Copeland (1938) Separated bacteria into a new kingdom Monera, leading to the Four Kingdom Classification.
Robert H. Whittaker (1969) Proposed the modern Five Kingdom Classification consisting of Monera, Protista, Fungi, Plantae and Animalia.

Why Did Classification Systems Change?

  • New organisms were discovered.
  • Microscopes revealed cellular differences.
  • Scientists recognised prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells.
  • Mode of nutrition differed among organisms.
  • Evolutionary relationships became better understood.

Five Kingdom Classification

The Five Kingdom Classification groups all living organisms based on common characteristics such as cell type, cell structure, level of organisation, mode of nutrition and ecological role.

Basis of Five Kingdom Classification

Criterion Classification Based On
Cell Type Prokaryotic or Eukaryotic
Cell Structure Presence or absence of cell wall
Level of Organisation Unicellular or Multicellular
Mode of Nutrition Autotrophic or Heterotrophic
Ecological Role Producer, Consumer or Decomposer

The Five Kingdoms

Kingdom Main Characteristics
Monera Unicellular prokaryotes.
Protista Mostly unicellular eukaryotes.
Fungi Heterotrophic organisms with chitin cell wall.
Plantae Multicellular autotrophs with cellulose cell wall.
Animalia Multicellular heterotrophs without cell wall.

Advantages of the Five Kingdom Classification

  • Separates prokaryotes from eukaryotes.
  • Distinguishes unicellular and multicellular organisms.
  • Separates fungi from plants.
  • Reflects evolutionary relationships more accurately.
  • Provides a scientific and systematic method of classification.

Kingdom Monera, Protista and Fungi

Kingdom Monera

Kingdom Monera consists of the simplest living organisms. They are unicellular, prokaryotic organisms that lack a true nucleus and membrane-bound cell organelles. They are found in almost every type of habitat. :contentReference[oaicite:1]{index=1}

Characteristics of Monera

  • Unicellular and prokaryotic.
  • No true nucleus.
  • No membrane-bound organelles.
  • May be autotrophic or heterotrophic.
  • Reproduce mainly by binary fission.

Examples of Monera

  • Bacteria
  • Cyanobacteria (Blue-green algae)

Importance of Monera

  • Help in decomposition.
  • Improve soil fertility through nitrogen fixation.
  • Used in making curd, cheese and medicines.
  • Useful in sewage treatment and biogas production.
  • Some bacteria cause diseases in plants, animals and humans.

Kingdom Protista

Kingdom Protista includes mostly unicellular eukaryotic organisms. Most protists live in aquatic or moist environments and show a wide variety of modes of nutrition.

Characteristics of Protista

  • Unicellular and eukaryotic.
  • Possess a true nucleus.
  • Mostly aquatic.
  • Some are autotrophic, while others are heterotrophic.
  • Many move using cilia, flagella or pseudopodia.

Examples of Protista

  • Amoeba
  • Paramecium
  • Euglena
  • Diatoms

Importance of Protista

  • Form the base of many aquatic food chains.
  • Produce oxygen through photosynthesis.
  • Recycle nutrients in aquatic ecosystems.
  • Some protists cause diseases.

Kingdom Fungi

Kingdom Fungi includes organisms that obtain food by absorbing nutrients from organic matter. Their cell walls are made of chitin, and they commonly reproduce through spores.

Characteristics of Fungi

  • Eukaryotic organisms.
  • Cell wall made of chitin.
  • Mostly multicellular (yeast is unicellular).
  • Heterotrophic mode of nutrition.
  • Reproduce mainly by spores.

Modes of Nutrition in Fungi

  • Saprophytic – Feed on dead and decaying matter.
  • Parasitic – Obtain food from living organisms.
  • Symbiotic – Live in association with other organisms for mutual benefit.

Examples of Fungi

  • Mushroom
  • Rhizopus (Bread mould)
  • Yeast
  • Penicillium

Importance of Fungi

  • Act as natural decomposers.
  • Recycle nutrients in ecosystems.
  • Used in baking and fermentation.
  • Produce antibiotics such as penicillin.
  • Edible mushrooms are an important food source.
  • Some fungi spoil food and cause diseases.

Comparison of Monera, Protista and Fungi

Feature Monera Protista Fungi
Cell Type Prokaryotic Eukaryotic Eukaryotic
Organisation Unicellular Mostly Unicellular Mostly Multicellular
Cell Wall Usually Present Variable Present (Chitin)
Nutrition Auto/Heterotrophic Auto/Heterotrophic Heterotrophic
Examples Bacteria Amoeba, Euglena Mushroom, Yeast

ATP Education Concept Builder

The Five Kingdom Classification is based on scientific characteristics rather than simple appearance. It considers cell organisation, nutrition and evolutionary relationships, making it one of the most reliable systems for studying biodiversity.

Monera, Protista and Fungi differ mainly in their cell type, body organisation and mode of nutrition. Monera are prokaryotic, Protista are simple eukaryotes, while Fungi are heterotrophic organisms with chitin cell walls that play a vital role as decomposers.

ATP Education Exam Booster

  • Remember the names of all five kingdoms in correct sequence.
  • CBSE competency-based questions may ask why Whittaker's system is more scientific than the earlier classification systems.
  • Differentiate Monera, Protista and Fungi.
  • Remember the characteristics and examples of each kingdom.
  • Learn the nutritional modes of fungi.
