This section explains the role of peasants and the Church, agricultural developments, the growth of towns and trade, the crisis of the fourteenth century, and the gradual decline of feudalism in medieval Europe.
9. The Third Order – Peasants
- Largest Social Group – Peasants formed the largest section of medieval European society and were responsible for agricultural production.
- Free Peasants – Some peasants owned or rented land and enjoyed limited personal freedom.
- Serfs – Serfs were bound to the manor and could not leave the estate without the permission of the lord.
- Labour Services – They cultivated the lord's land, repaired roads, maintained buildings and performed various compulsory services.
- Heavy Burden – Peasants had to pay taxes, rent and the Church tithe in addition to providing labour.
10. Life of Serfs
- Limited Freedom – Serfs were not slaves but had very limited personal and economic freedom.
- No Ownership Rights – They could not freely sell or transfer the land they cultivated.
- Marriage Restrictions – In many regions, permission from the lord was required before marriage.
- Economic Hardships – Most serfs lived in simple houses and depended entirely on agriculture for survival.
- Contribution – Their labour supported the entire feudal economy.
