1. Medieval Europe after the Fall of the Roman Empire

2. Rise of Feudalism

• Meaning of Feudalism – Feudalism was a system based on land ownership, loyalty and military service between lords and vassals.

• Economic Basis – Agriculture formed the backbone of the feudal economy, with peasants cultivating the land.

3. France and England under Feudalism

• France – France emerged from the old Roman province of Gaul and became one of the strongest feudal kingdoms.
• The Franks – The Frankish rulers strengthened Christianity and established close relations with the Church.
• Charlemagne – In 800 CE, Charlemagne was crowned Holy Roman Emperor by Pope Leo III.
• England – Feudalism developed rapidly after the Norman Conquest of England in 1066.
• Political Importance – Both France and England became major centres of feudal society.

4. The Three Orders of Society

• First Order – Clergy – Priests, bishops and monks who performed religious duties and guided society.
• Second Order – Nobility – Kings, lords and knights who controlled land and protected the kingdom.
• Third Order – Peasantry – Farmers and labourers who cultivated the land and produced food.
• Social Hierarchy – Society was organised according to occupation and responsibilities rather than equality.
• Mutual Dependence – Each order depended upon the others for the smooth functioning of society.

5. The Second Order – Nobility

• Land Ownership – Nobles owned vast estates and exercised complete control over their lands.
• Vassalage – Nobles became vassals of the king by taking an oath of loyalty and military service.
• Military Duties – They maintained armies and defended the kingdom during wars.
• Judicial Powers – Lords held courts, collected taxes and administered justice within their estates.
• Manor House – Every noble lived in a manor, which became the centre of economic and political life.

6. Vassalage and Feudal Relations

• Meaning – Vassalage was a formal agreement of loyalty between a lord and his follower.
• Oath Ceremony – The vassal pledged loyalty by taking an oath before the lord, often inside a church.
• Grant of Land – In return, the lord granted a fief or land to the vassal.
• Protection – The lord promised military protection and security to the vassal.
• Importance – This relationship formed the foundation of the feudal political system.

7. The Manorial Estate

• Meaning – A manorial estate was a self-sufficient agricultural unit controlled by a feudal lord.
• Main Components – It included the manor house, farmland, forests, pastures, workshops and a village.
• Self-Sufficiency – Most daily necessities such as food, clothes and tools were produced within the manor.
• Castle and Church – Large estates generally had a castle for defence and a church for religious activities.
• Economic Centre – The manor served as the centre of agricultural production and local administration.

8. The Rise of Knights

• Need for Knights – Frequent wars created the demand for trained cavalry soldiers.
• Training – Knights received military training from childhood and specialised in horse riding and warfare.
• Reward – They received land or a fief from the lord in return for military service.
• Loyalty – A knight's first duty was to remain loyal to his lord.
• Importance – Knights became the backbone of the medieval feudal army.
