Chapter 12. Patterns in Life: Diversity and Classification

This section introduces biodiversity, explains its importance for life on Earth and describes how evolution has produced the enormous variety of living organisms. It also highlights India's rich biodiversity and the concept of biodiversity hotspots.

Biodiversity and Evolution of Life

Biodiversity

Biodiversity is the variety of living organisms found on Earth. It includes the diversity of plants, animals, fungi and microorganisms living in different habitats. Biodiversity makes ecosystems stable and supports the survival of life.

Levels of Biodiversity

  • Genetic Diversity – Variation among individuals of the same species.
  • Species Diversity – Variety of different species present in an ecosystem.
  • Ecosystem Diversity – Variety of ecosystems such as forests, deserts, grasslands and wetlands.

Importance of Biodiversity

  • Maintains ecological balance.
  • Provides food, medicines, fibres and fuel.
  • Supports agriculture and pollination.
  • Maintains nutrient cycling in nature.
  • Helps organisms adapt to environmental changes.
  • Contributes to scientific research and conservation.

India – A Rich Centre of Biodiversity

India is one of the world's biodiversity-rich countries. Its diverse climate and landforms support a large number of plants, animals and microorganisms. Many species found in India are unique to specific regions.

Endemic Species

Endemic species are plants or animals that are naturally found only in a particular geographical region and nowhere else in the world.

Examples:

  • Nilgiri Tahr
  • Lion-tailed Macaque
  • Purple Frog

Biodiversity Hotspots

Biodiversity hotspots are regions that contain exceptionally high biodiversity and a large number of endemic species but are under serious threat due to habitat loss. Protecting these areas is essential for conserving biodiversity.

Major Biodiversity Hotspots Associated with India

HotspotImportance
HimalayaRich diversity of plants and animals.
Western Ghats & Sri LankaHigh number of endemic species.
Indo-BurmaRich forest biodiversity.
Sundaland (Nicobar Islands)Unique island ecosystems.

Evolution of Biodiversity

Biodiversity has developed gradually through the process of evolution. Over millions of years, organisms have changed, adapted and diversified to survive in different environments. These evolutionary changes have resulted in the formation of new species.

Factors Responsible for Biodiversity

  • Variation among organisms.
  • Adaptation to different environments.
  • Natural selection.
  • Evolution over long periods.
  • Geographical isolation.

Why Should Biodiversity Be Conserved?

  • Prevents extinction of species.
  • Maintains ecological stability.
  • Protects natural resources.
  • Ensures sustainable development.
  • Preserves life for future generations.

Classification of Living Organisms

What is Classification?

Classification is the scientific process of grouping living organisms according to their similarities, differences and evolutionary relationships. It provides a systematic framework for studying the diversity of life.

Why Do We Classify Organisms?

Millions of organisms exist on Earth. Studying each organism individually is difficult. Classification organises organisms into groups, making their study simple, systematic and meaningful.

Criteria Used for Classification

Scientists use different characteristics to classify living organisms.

CriterionBasis of Classification
External FeaturesShape, size and body organisation.
Mode of NutritionAutotrophic or heterotrophic.
Internal StructurePresence of tissues, organs and skeletal patterns.
Cell StructureUnicellular or multicellular, prokaryotic or eukaryotic, presence or absence of cell wall.
Ecological RoleProducer, consumer or decomposer.
ReproductionSexual or asexual reproduction.
Genetic SimilaritySimilarity in inherited characters and DNA.

Organisms having similar characteristics often indicate a common evolutionary origin.

Need for Biological Classification

Biological classification is the scientific system of grouping organisms based on their similarities and differences. It helps scientists organise biological information and understand relationships among living organisms.

Importance of Classification

  • Makes the study of organisms systematic and organised.
  • Helps compare similarities and differences among organisms.
  • Explains relationships between different organisms.
  • Helps identify and name newly discovered organisms.
  • Supports biodiversity conservation by identifying threatened species.
  • Provides a common system used by scientists throughout the world.

ATP Education Concept Builder

Biodiversity is the result of millions of years of evolution. Every species plays a unique role in maintaining ecological balance. Conserving biodiversity helps protect ecosystems, supports human life and ensures the survival of future generations.

Classification is not simply arranging organisms into groups. It reflects their similarities, differences and evolutionary relationships, helping scientists understand the diversity of life in an organised and scientific manner.
