This section explains Kingdom Fungi, the third eukaryotic kingdom in the Five Kingdom Classification. Fungi are heterotrophic organisms with chitinous cell walls. They obtain food by absorption, reproduce mainly through spores and play a vital role in decomposition, nutrient recycling and various industrial applications.
Kingdom Fungi – Nature's Decomposers
Introduction
Kingdom Fungi consists of eukaryotic organisms that cannot prepare their own food. They absorb nutrients from dead organic matter or living organisms. Most fungi are multicellular, but yeast is a well-known unicellular fungus. Their cell walls are made of chitin, which distinguishes them from plants.
Characteristics of Kingdom Fungi
- Eukaryotic organisms.
- Mostly multicellular (except yeast).
- Cell wall made of chitin.
- Heterotrophic mode of nutrition.
- Do not contain chlorophyll.
- Body consists of fine thread-like structures called hyphae.
- A network of hyphae forms the mycelium.

Modes of Nutrition in Fungi
- Saprophytic – Obtain food from dead and decaying organic matter.
- Parasitic – Obtain food from living hosts and may cause diseases.
- Symbiotic – Live in mutual association with other organisms.
Reproduction in Fungi
Fungi reproduce both sexually and asexually. Asexual reproduction commonly occurs through the formation of spores, which germinate under favourable conditions to produce new fungi.
