Chapter 12. Patterns in Life: Diversity and Classification

Scientists have developed different systems of classification over time as their understanding of living organisms increased. Improvements in scientific knowledge and technology led to the development of the modern Five Kingdom Classification, which groups organisms according to their cell type, level of organisation, nutrition and other important characteristics.

Kingdom Monera, Protista and Fungi

Kingdom Monera

Characteristics of Monera

  • Unicellular and prokaryotic.
  • No true nucleus.
  • No membrane-bound organelles.
  • May be autotrophic or heterotrophic.
  • Reproduce mainly by binary fission.

  • Bacteria
  • Cyanobacteria (Blue-green algae)

Importance of Monera

  • Help in decomposition.
  • Improve soil fertility through nitrogen fixation.
  • Used in making curd, cheese and medicines.
  • Useful in sewage treatment and biogas production.
  • Some bacteria cause diseases in plants, animals and humans.

Kingdom Protista

Kingdom Protista includes mostly unicellular eukaryotic organisms. Most protists live in aquatic or moist environments and show a wide variety of modes of nutrition. 

Characteristics of Protista

  • Unicellular and eukaryotic.
  • Possess a true nucleus.
  • Mostly aquatic.
  • Some are autotrophic, while others are heterotrophic.
  • Many move using cilia, flagella or pseudopodia.

Examples of Protista

  • Amoeba
  • Paramecium
  • Euglena
  • Diatoms

Importance of Protista

  • Form the base of many aquatic food chains.
  • Produce oxygen through photosynthesis.
  • Recycle nutrients in aquatic ecosystems.
  • Some protists cause diseases.

Kingdom Fungi

Kingdom Fungi includes organisms that obtain food by absorbing nutrients from organic matter. Their cell walls are made of chitin, and they commonly reproduce through spores. 

Characteristics of Fungi

  • Eukaryotic organisms.
  • Cell wall made of chitin.
  • Mostly multicellular (yeast is unicellular).
  • Heterotrophic mode of nutrition.
  • Reproduce mainly by spores.

Modes of Nutrition in Fungi

  • Saprophytic – Feed on dead and decaying matter.
  • Parasitic – Obtain food from living organisms.
  • Symbiotic – Live in association with other organisms for mutual benefit.

  • Penicillium

  • Act as natural decomposers.
  • Recycle nutrients in ecosystems.
  • Used in baking and fermentation.
