Topic: Trade and Exchange
Chapter 1. Writing and City Life
This section explains the development of trade, transport, writing, city administration and the important features of urban life in Mesopotamia. It also highlights the economic activities that supported the growth of cities.
Trade and Exchange
Trade: Trade played an important role in the growth of Mesopotamian cities. Since many natural resources were not available locally, merchants imported essential materials from neighbouring regions.
Exports: Mesopotamia exported agricultural products, woollen textiles and other finished goods to different regions.
Imports: Timber, copper, tin, silver, gold, precious stones and shells were brought from distant countries.
(i) Trade connected Mesopotamia with Iran, Anatolia and the Gulf region.
(ii) Long-distance trade increased the wealth of cities.
(iii) Merchants became an important part of urban society.
(iv) Trade encouraged the growth of markets and commercial centres.
Transport System
Water Transport: Rivers provided the easiest and cheapest means of transport in Mesopotamia.
Boats: Goods were carried through rivers and canals by wooden boats.
Land Transport: Carts pulled by animals were used for transporting goods over short distances.
(i) Waterways reduced the cost of transportation.
(ii) Rivers connected villages with major cities.
(iii) Trade became faster through river routes.
(iv) Transport supported both agriculture and commerce.
Writing System
Need for Writing: As trade and administration expanded, people needed a reliable system to maintain records.
Cuneiform Script: The people of Mesopotamia developed Cuneiform, one of the world's earliest writing systems.
Clay Tablets: Records were written on wet clay tablets using a reed stylus.
(i) Writing was first used for keeping accounts.
(ii) Later it was used for literature, education and administration.
(iii) Scribes received special training to read and write.
(iv) Thousands of clay tablets have survived till today.
The Role of Scribes
Scribes: Scribes were educated people who prepared official records, business accounts and legal documents.
Education: Students attended special schools to learn reading, writing and mathematics.
(i) Scribes worked in temples and royal offices.
(ii) They copied religious and literary texts.
(iii) They maintained tax and trade records.
(iv) Their work helped preserve history.
City Administration
Administration: Large cities required organised administration to maintain peace, collect taxes and manage public works.
Rulers: Kings supervised irrigation systems, defence and public construction.
Officials: Government officials looked after law, trade and record keeping.

Features of Urban Economy
Occupations: Urban society included farmers, craftsmen, merchants, priests, soldiers and government officials.
Specialisation: People performed different occupations according to their skills.
(i) Craftsmen produced pottery, jewellery, tools and textiles.
(ii) Merchants exchanged goods within and outside Mesopotamia.
(iii) Farmers supplied food to the cities.
(iv) Labour division increased production and economic growth.

Urban Centres: Cities became centres of administration, education, religion and trade.
