Mesopotamia and Early Civilisation

Mesopotamia: Mesopotamia was one of the earliest civilizations in the world. It was located between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers in present-day Iraq. It became famous for its cities, writing system, literature, mathematics and astronomy.

Meaning of Mesopotamia: The word Mesopotamia comes from the Greek words Mesos (middle) and Potamos (river). It means "The Land Between Two Rivers."

Languages: The earliest people spoke the Sumerian language. Later, Akkadian and Aramaic became widely used in the region.

Historical Sources: Archaeologists study buildings, sculptures, seals, tools, jewellery, graves, clay tablets and written records to understand Mesopotamian civilization.

Geographical Features of Mesopotamia

Location: Mesopotamia formed an important part of present-day Iraq and was surrounded by rivers, plains, deserts and mountains.

(i) The north-eastern region had fertile plains, forests and sufficient rainfall for farming.

(ii) The northern grasslands were suitable for sheep and goat rearing because farming was limited.

(iii) The eastern region connected Mesopotamia with the Iranian highlands through river valleys and mountain routes.

(iv) The southern region was mainly desert, where the earliest cities and writing system developed with the help of river irrigation.

Agriculture and Climate

River Valley Agriculture: The Tigris and Euphrates rivers deposited fertile silt during floods, making agriculture highly productive.

(i) Farmers cultivated crops such as barley, wheat, peas and lentils.

(ii) Irrigation canals supplied water to fields because rainfall was limited in southern Mesopotamia.

(iii) Agriculture became the main source of food, employment and economic growth.

(iv) Sheep and goats were widely reared in the northern grasslands.

The Earliest Cities

Beginning of Cities: The earliest cities appeared during the Bronze Age around 3000 BCE. These cities became centres of trade, administration and religious activities.

Bronze Technology: Bronze was made by mixing copper and tin. It was used to make tools, weapons, ornaments and household objects.

Growth of Crafts: Skilled craftsmen produced furniture, jewellery, seals, pottery and metal tools, increasing the importance of cities.

Urbanisation

Meaning of Urbanisation: Urbanisation is the process through which villages gradually develop into towns and cities with organised economic and social life.

(i) Surplus agricultural production supported a large population.

(ii) People adopted specialised occupations such as traders, craftsmen, priests and officials.

(iii) Cities became centres of administration, religion and commerce.

(iv) Villages and cities remained closely connected through trade and the exchange of goods.
