Chapter 8. (Poem) For Anne Gregory
For Anne Gregory is a thoughtful poem written by the famous Irish poet William Butler Yeats (W. B. Yeats). The poem is presented as a conversation between a young man and Anne Gregory. Through this conversation, the poet explores the difference between physical beauty and inner beauty. The poem conveys that external appearance may attract people at first, but true and lasting love is based on a person's inner qualities, character, and soul rather than outward beauty.
Poem Summary (English)
The poem begins with a young man telling Anne Gregory that her beautiful yellow hair attracts everyone who sees her. According to him, no young man can truly love her for herself because her attractive appearance captures all the attention. He believes that people are naturally influenced by physical beauty before they get to know a person's real nature.
Anne Gregory disagrees with the young man's opinion. She replies that she can easily change the colour of her hair by dyeing it black, brown, or any other colour. She believes that if someone truly loves her, that person should love her for her personality and not merely because of her beautiful hair. Her response reflects her desire for genuine and sincere love.
In the final part of the poem, the poet introduces the opinion of an old religious man. He says that only God is capable of loving a person for the purity of the soul rather than for physical appearance. Human beings are often attracted by external beauty, but God alone loves people for their true inner self.
Through this simple dialogue, W. B. Yeats highlights an important truth about human relationships. Physical beauty is temporary and may fade with time, but qualities such as honesty, kindness, goodness, and character remain valuable throughout life. The poem encourages readers to value inner beauty over outward appearance.
Poem Summary (Hindi /
