Reproduction: How Life Continues
Topic: Asexual Reproduction
Chapter 11. Reproduction: How Life Continues
This section explains the meaning of reproduction, asexual reproduction, vegetative propagation in plants and its importance in agriculture. It also describes natural and artificial methods of vegetative propagation such as cutting, grafting, layering and tissue culture.
Asexual Reproduction and Vegetative Propagation
Reproduction is the process by which living organisms produce new individuals of their own kind. In asexual reproduction, only one parent is involved, and the offspring produced are genetically identical to the parent. This method is common in microorganisms and many plants.
Asexual Reproduction
Asexual reproduction is a mode of reproduction in which a single parent produces offspring without the formation or fusion of gametes.
Characteristics of Asexual Reproduction
- Only one parent is involved.
- No fertilisation takes place.
- Gametes are not formed.
- Offspring are genetically identical to the parent.
- Produces organisms called clones.
- It is a fast and efficient method of reproduction.
Examples of Asexual Reproduction
- Bacteria
- Amoeba
- Yeast
- Hydra
- Sponge
- Many flowering plants
Vegetative Propagation
Vegetative propagation is a type of asexual reproduction in which new plants grow from the vegetative parts such as roots, stems or leaves instead of seeds.
Natural Vegetative Propagation
| Plant | Vegetative Part |
|---|---|
| Potato | Underground Stem (Tuber) |
| Ginger | Rhizome |
| Sugarcane | Stem |
| Money Plant | Stem Cutting |
| Bryophyllum | Leaves |
Importance of Vegetative Propagation
- Produces identical plants with desirable characters.
- Helps rapid multiplication of plants.
- Plants mature and bear flowers earlier.
- Useful for seedless or poor seed-producing plants.
- Widely used in agriculture and horticulture.
Artificial Methods of Vegetative Propagation
1. Cutting
A healthy stem cutting containing nodes is planted in moist soil. It develops roots and grows into a new plant.
Examples: Rose, Money Plant, Sugarcane, Bougainvillea.
2. Grafting
In grafting, the stem of one plant (scion) is joined with the rooted part (stock) of another plant. Both parts grow together as a single plant.
Examples: Rose, Mango, Citrus plants.
3. Layering
A flexible branch is bent and covered with soil while still attached to the parent plant. After roots develop, it is separated to grow as a new plant.
Examples: Lemon, Jasmine, Guava.
4. Tissue Culture
Small pieces of plant tissue are grown under sterile laboratory conditions to produce a large number of healthy and disease-free plants.
Examples: Banana, Orchid, Sugarcane.
Advantages of Tissue Culture
- Produces disease-free plants.
- Large numbers of plants can be produced quickly.
- Maintains desirable plant characteristics.
- Improves agricultural productivity.
Applications in Agriculture
- Mass production of crop plants.
- Development of high-yield varieties.
- Propagation of seedless plants.
- Production of virus-free planting material.
- Commercial cultivation of fruits, flowers and ornamental plants.
ATP Education Concept Builder
Remember that vegetative propagation is a type of asexual reproduction. Since only one parent is involved, all offspring are genetically identical and are called clones. This method helps farmers rapidly multiply plants with desirable characteristics.
ATP Education Exam Booster
- Differentiate between asexual reproduction and vegetative propagation.
- Remember the examples of natural vegetative propagation.
- Learn the four artificial methods—cutting, grafting, layering and tissue culture.
- Know the agricultural importance of vegetative propagation.
- Understand why offspring produced by asexual reproduction are called clones.
- CBSE competency-based questions often ask students to explain why tissue culture is preferred for producing disease-free plants.
