Topic: Chapter Review and Key Points

Chapter 5. Exploring Mixtures and their Separation

Pure substances and mixtures are present everywhere around us. Different substances combine to form mixtures, but each component retains its own properties. Since mixtures contain two or more substances mixed physically, they can be separated by suitable physical methods based on differences in their properties. This chapter explains the types of mixtures, solutions, concentration, solubility and various separation techniques used in laboratories, industries and daily life.

Chapter Overview

  • Pure Substance – A substance made up of only one kind of particles with a fixed composition.
  • Mixture – A physical combination of two or more substances in any proportion.
  • Characteristics of Mixtures – Components retain their individual properties and can be separated by physical methods.
  • Homogeneous Mixture – Has a uniform composition throughout the mixture.
  • Heterogeneous Mixture – Has a non-uniform composition and visibly different components.
  • Solution – A homogeneous mixture formed by dissolving a solute in a solvent.
  • Solute and Solvent – The solute dissolves in the solvent to form a solution.
  • Concentration of Solution – Indicates the amount of solute present in a given amount of solution.
  • Solubility – The maximum amount of solute that dissolves in a solvent at a particular temperature.
  • Saturated Solution – A solution that cannot dissolve more solute at a given temperature.
  • Unsaturated Solution – A solution that can dissolve more solute.
  • Effect of Temperature – Solubility of most solids increases with an increase in temperature.
  • Separation of Mixtures – Different physical methods are selected according to the properties of the components.
  • Sedimentation and Decantation – Used to separate heavier insoluble particles from liquids.
  • Filtration – Separates insoluble solids from liquids using a filter.
  • Evaporation – Used to obtain dissolved solids from a solution.
  • Crystallisation – Produces pure crystals from a saturated solution.
  • Distillation – Separates a solvent from a solution or liquids with different boiling points.
  • Fractional Distillation – Separates two or more miscible liquids having different boiling points.
  • Separating Funnel – Used to separate immiscible liquids of different densities.
  • Paper Chromatography – Separates coloured components of a mixture based on different rates of movement.
  • Applications – Separation techniques are widely used in water purification, food processing, medicine, petroleum refining and chemical industries.
