This section introduces biodiversity, explains its importance for life on Earth and describes how evolution has produced the enormous variety of living organisms. It also highlights India's rich biodiversity and the concept of biodiversity hotspots. 

Biodiversity and Evolution of Life

Biodiversity

Biodiversity is the variety of living organisms found on Earth. It includes the diversity of plants, animals, fungi and microorganisms living in different habitats. Biodiversity makes ecosystems stable and supports the survival of life.

Levels of Biodiversity

  • Genetic Diversity – Variation among individuals of the same species.
  • Species Diversity – Variety of different species present in an ecosystem.
  • Ecosystem Diversity – Variety of ecosystems such as forests, deserts, grasslands and wetlands.

Importance of Biodiversity

  • Maintains ecological balance.
  • Provides food, medicines, fibres and fuel.
  • Supports agriculture and pollination.
  • Maintains nutrient cycling in nature.
  • Helps organisms adapt to environmental changes.

India – A Rich Centre of Biodiversity

India is one of the world's biodiversity-rich countries. Its diverse climate and landforms support a large number of plants, animals and microorganisms. Many species found in India are unique to specific regions. 

Endemic Species

Endemic species are plants or animals that are naturally found only in a particular geographical region and nowhere else in the world.

Examples:

  • Nilgiri Tahr
  • Lion-tailed Macaque
  • Purple Frog

Biodiversity Hotspots

Biodiversity hotspots are regions that contain exceptionally high biodiversity and a large number of endemic species but are under serious threat due to habitat loss. Protecting these areas is essential for conserving biodiversity.

Biodiversity has developed gradually through the process of evolution. Over millions of years, organisms have changed, adapted and diversified to survive in different environments. These evolutionary changes have resulted in the formation of new species.

Classification of Living Organisms

What is Classification?

Classification is the scientific process of grouping living organisms according to their similarities, differences and evolutionary relationships. It provides a systematic framework for studying the diversity of life. 

Why Do We Classify Organisms?

Millions of organisms exist on Earth. Studying each organism individually is difficult. Classification organises organisms into groups, making their study simple, systematic and meaningful. 

Criteria Used for Classification

Scientists use different characteristics to classify living organisms.

External Features Shape, size and body organisation.
Mode of Nutrition Autotrophic or heterotrophic.
Internal Structure Presence of tissues, organs and skeletal patterns.
Cell Structure Unicellular or multicellular, prokaryotic or eukaryotic, presence or absence of cell wall.
Ecological Role Producer, consumer or decomposer.
Reproduction Sexual or asexual reproduction.
Genetic Similarity Similarity in inherited characters and DNA.

Organisms having similar characteristics often indicate a common evolutionary origin.
