This section explains how cells were discovered and how microscopes made it possible to study the tiny building blocks of living organisms. It also introduces magnification, resolution and the methods used to estimate cell size.

1. Discovery of the Cell

The discovery of the cell marked the beginning of modern biology. Before the invention of microscopes, scientists could not observe cells because they are too small to be seen with the naked eye. The development of microscopes opened a completely new world of scientific exploration.

The discovery of the cell refers to the first observation of tiny compartments in living material using a microscope.

Important Scientists

  • Robert Hooke (1665) – Observed thin slices of cork under a microscope and introduced the term "Cell" because the small box-like structures resembled the rooms of a monastery.
  • Antonie van Leeuwenhoek – First observed living cells and microorganisms using his powerful handmade microscope.

2. What is a Cell?

  • Basic Unit of Structure – Every organism is made up of one or more cells.
  • Basic Unit of Function – All life processes take place inside cells.
  • Living Unit – Each cell is capable of carrying out essential activities of life.
  • Microscopic Size – Most cells can be seen only with the help of a microscope.

Types of Organisms Based on Number of Cells

  • Unicellular Organisms – Organisms made up of only one cell, such as Amoeba, Paramecium and bacteria.
  • Multicellular Organisms – Organisms made up of many specialised cells, such as humans, animals and plants.

3. Why Do We Need a Microscope?

4. Types of Microscopes

Classification

  • Simple Microscope – Uses a single lens to magnify small objects.
  • Compound (Light) Microscope – Uses two or more lenses and visible light to observe cells and tissues.
  • Electron Microscope – Uses a beam of electrons to produce highly magnified images of cell organelles.

5. Magnification and Resolution

Scientists use two important terms while studying microscopes—magnification and resolution. Both are essential for observing tiny structures clearly.

Definition

Magnification is the process of enlarging the image of an object.

Resolution is the ability of a microscope to distinguish two closely placed points as separate.

  • Magnification – Makes tiny objects appear larger.
  • Resolution – Produces a sharper and clearer image.
  • Better Observation – Both together help scientists study minute details of cells.

6. Estimating the Size of a Cell

Cells are too small to measure directly with an ordinary ruler. Scientists estimate their size using the field of view of a microscope and simple mathematical calculations.

Cell size estimation is the process of calculating the approximate size of a cell using microscopic observations.

Steps Involved

  • Observe the Cell – Place the specimen under the microscope.
  • Determine the Field of View – Measure the visible circular area.
  • Count the Cells – Estimate how many cells fit across the diameter.
  • Calculate Cell Size – Divide the field diameter by the number of cells.

  • Scientific Accuracy – Helps estimate microscopic dimensions.
  • Biological Studies – Useful for comparing different types of cells.
  • Laboratory Investigations – Develops practical observation and measurement skills.
