Salary

A salary is a fixed and regular payment generally paid monthly by an employer to an employee.

Wage

A wage is a payment made by an employer to a worker for a specific period of time.

Payment in Kind

Payment in kind is a non-cash payment received for work performed. For example, a farm labourer may receive some of the payment in the form of mangoes.

Value Addition

Value addition means adding value to something by transforming it into another form.

For example, Rajesh buys wood for ₹600 and makes a chair that he sells for ₹1,000. The additional ₹400 represents the monetary value of his skill, time and effort. Thus, he has added value to the wood by turning it into furniture.

Importance of Non-Economic Activities

Non-economic activities may not involve money, but they generate important value in our lives. They contribute to social welfare, personal well-being and the overall quality of life.

Sevā – Selfless Service

Sevā means selfless service. It involves helping others without expecting anything in return.

Sevā can be seen in places such as temples, gurudwaras, mosques and churches. For example, langars or community kitchens at gurudwaras serve food to visitors for free.

Community Participation

Community participation means people coming together and working collectively for the benefit of their community and society.

Swachh Bharat Abhiyan

The Swachh Bharat Abhiyan is an example of collective community participation. People work together to keep homes, streets, roads, parks and other public places clean.

Van Mahotsav

Van Mahotsav, the festival of forests, promotes awareness about the value of trees and the conservation of forests. It brings community members together for tree plantation drives.
