Chapter 2. Oceans and Continents

Indian Navy and the Ocean

The oceans have been an important part of Indian culture and tradition since ancient times.

  • The emblem of the Indian Navy contains the motto “Sam noh Varunah”.
  • “Sam noh Varunah” means “Be auspicious to us, O Varuna.”
  • Varuna is a Vedic deity associated with the oceans, the sky and water in general.
  • This reflects the importance of oceans and water in India's cultural heritage.

Distribution of Oceans in the Hemispheres

Oceans and continents are unevenly distributed between the Northern and Southern Hemispheres.

  • The two hemispheres do not contain equal proportions of land and water.
  • The Southern Hemisphere contains a greater proportion of water.
  • The Northern Hemisphere contains a greater proportion of land.
  • Maps viewed from above the North Pole and South Pole clearly show this difference.
  • The blue areas on such maps represent oceans and their smaller extensions.
  • Smaller extensions of oceans may be called seas, bays and gulfs.
  • The oceans are connected with one another rather than being completely isolated.

Oceans and Their Hemispheres

Ocean Important Location
Pacific Ocean Extends across both Northern and Southern Hemispheres
Atlantic Ocean Extends across both Northern and Southern Hemispheres
Indian Ocean Mostly in the Southern Hemisphere but extends into the Northern Hemisphere
Southern Ocean Surrounds Antarctica and lies in the Southern Hemisphere
Arctic Ocean Lies around the North Pole in the Northern Hemisphere

Relative Size of the Oceans

The five oceans are not equal in size. Their order from largest to smallest is important for map-based questions.

  1. Pacific Ocean – Largest
  2. Atlantic Ocean – Second largest
  3. Indian Ocean – Third largest
  4. Southern Ocean – Fourth largest
  5. Arctic Ocean – Smallest

Indian Ocean – Location

The Indian Ocean has a special geographical importance for India.

  • Asia lies to the north of the Indian Ocean.
  • Africa lies to its west.
  • Australia lies to its east.
  • The Southern Ocean lies towards its south.
  • The Arabian Sea is located to the west of India.
  • The Bay of Bengal is located to the east of India.

Clouds, Rainfall and Oceans

The white patches seen over the Earth from space are often large masses of clouds. Oceans are an important source of these clouds and therefore of rainfall.

  • Large masses of clouds form over the oceans.
  • These clouds move towards the continents and bring rainfall.
  • India receives important monsoon rainfall originating over the ocean.
  • Monsoon rainfall is essential for Indian agriculture.
  • Rainfall is also essential for plants, animals and human life.
  • This connection between oceans, clouds and rainfall forms part of the water cycle.

Oceans as a Source of Natural Disasters

Oceans are essential for life, but they can also give rise to destructive natural events.

  • Storms over oceans may bring extreme rainfall and very strong winds.
  • Cyclones can cause widespread damage in coastal areas.
  • Tsunamis are another major natural disaster originating in oceans.
  • A tsunami is generally caused by a strong earthquake or volcanic eruption at the bottom of the ocean.
  • Tsunami waves can travel thousands of kilometres.
  • They can submerge coastal areas and cause widespread destruction.

Indian Ocean Tsunami – 2004

The Indian Ocean tsunami of 2004 was one of the most destructive natural disasters associated with the ocean.

  • It occurred on 26 December 2004.
  • A powerful earthquake in Indonesia caused the tsunami.
  • India and 13 other countries around the Indian Ocean were affected.
  • More than two lakh people lost their lives.
  • In India, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands were severely affected.
  • The coasts of Tamil Nadu and Kerala also suffered major damage and loss of life.

Tsunami Early Warning System

Tsunamis are rare but extremely destructive. In many cases, they can be detected before reaching the coast.

  • Countries cooperate through early warning systems.
  • The Indian Ocean Tsunami Warning System helps provide warnings about tsunami threats.
  • India is one of the countries contributing to this warning system.
  • Early warnings allow authorities and people to take measures to protect lives and property.

National Disaster Management Authority

Natural events that cause loss of life and property require organised disaster management.

  • Disaster management deals with measures for preparing for and responding to disasters.
  • India has its own National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA).
  • NDMA deals with different kinds of disasters.
  • Effective disaster management helps reduce loss of life and property.

Different Ways of Counting Continents

The number of continents is not universally fixed because connected landmasses can be grouped in different ways.

  • Depending on how landmasses are grouped, the number of continents may be counted as four, five, six or seven.
  • North America and South America are generally considered two continents.
  • They can also be considered one connected landmass called America.
  • Europe and Asia form one continuous landmass.
  • For historical and cultural reasons, Europe and Asia are generally treated as two continents.
  • Geologists often regard Europe and Asia as one continent called Eurasia.
  • Africa and Eurasia are generally regarded as two continents, but can sometimes be considered one larger landmass.

Four-Continent Model

  • Africa-Eurasia
  • America
  • Antarctica
  • Australia

Five-Continent Model

  • Africa
  • America
  • Antarctica
  • Australia
  • Eurasia

Six-Continent Model

  • Africa
  • Antarctica
  • Australia
  • Eurasia
  • North America
  • South America

Seven-Continent Model

  • Africa
  • Antarctica
  • Asia
  • Australia
  • Europe
  • North America
  • South America

Most Widely Used Classification

The seven-continent classification is the most widely adopted and commonly used classification.

  • Asia
  • Africa
  • Europe
  • North America
  • South America
  • Antarctica
  • Australia

Olympic Rings and Continents

The five Olympic rings symbolise the gathering of sportspeople from around the world.

  • The rings were chosen to represent five inhabited continents.
  • These are Africa, America, Asia, Australia and Europe.
  • Antarctica is not included because it has no permanent native human population.

Relative Size of Continents

The continents differ greatly in their size. Comparing their relative areas helps us understand their geographical importance.

  • Asia is the largest continent.
  • Australia is the smallest continent.
  • North America is larger than South America.
  • Africa is larger than North America.
  • Antarctica is larger than Australia.
  • The seven-continent model is useful for comparing their relative sizes.

Islands – Important Points

Not all land on Earth belongs to continents. Many smaller pieces of land are surrounded by water.

  • A smaller piece of land surrounded by water on all sides is called an island.
  • There are lakhs of islands of different sizes around the world.
  • Continents are also surrounded by water, but they are too large to be classified as islands.
  • Greenland is the largest island in the world.
  • The area of Greenland is approximately equal to the combined area of the 10 largest states of India.

Indian Islands – Important Facts

  • India has more than 1,300 small islands.
  • The two major groups are the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Lakshadweep Islands.
  • Andaman and Nicobar Islands are located in the Bay of Bengal.
  • Lakshadweep Islands are located in the Arabian Sea.

Indian Antarctica Programme

India has been conducting scientific exploration and research in Antarctica for several decades.

  • The Indian Antarctica Programme has been exploring Antarctica since 1981.
  • India established its first scientific base station in Antarctica in 1983.
  • The first Indian scientific base was named Dakshin Gangotri.
  • Two more scientific bases were established later.
  • About 40 teams of Indian scientists have conducted research in Antarctica.
  • The research focuses especially on the evolution of climate and environment.
  • The scientific settlement also has facilities such as a library and a post office.

Oceans, Continents and the Water Cycle

Oceans and continents are closely connected through the Earth's water cycle.

  • Oceans provide water that enters the atmosphere.
  • Clouds form and move towards continents.
  • Rain falls over continents.
  • This water supports agriculture, plants, animals and human beings.
  • Water eventually returns to oceans through different processes.
  • Therefore, oceans are essential for maintaining life on land.

Oceans and Oxygen

  • Ocean flora produces more than half of the world's oxygen.
  • Marine plants therefore play a major role in sustaining life.
  • The importance of oceans goes far beyond their role as water bodies.

Oceans and Human History

  • Oceans have influenced human migration.
  • They have provided routes for trade and transportation.
  • They have played an important role in military campaigns.
  • Fishing has provided food and livelihoods to coastal communities.
  • Oceans have influenced the culture and traditions of many societies.
  • Many stories and legends of different cultures are connected with oceans and seas.

Threats to Oceans

Human activities are putting increasing pressure on ocean ecosystems.

  • Millions of tonnes of plastic waste enter the oceans every year.
  • Plastic pollution can harm or kill marine animals.
  • Ocean pollution damages marine ecosystems.
  • Overfishing reduces fish populations and affects marine life.
  • Protection of oceans requires responsible human behaviour.

World Oceans Day

  • World Oceans Day is observed every year on 8 June.
  • The United Nations designated 8 June as World Oceans Day.
  • The day highlights the importance of oceans in our lives.
  • It also reminds us of the need to protect oceans and marine ecosystems.
