Chapter 8. How the Land Becomes Sacred

Sacred Geography

Sacred Geography refers to the network of sacred places, pilgrimage routes and natural features that give a religious and cultural significance to the land.

  • Sacred places are spread throughout India.
  • These sacred places are not isolated; they are interconnected through pilgrimage networks.
  • These networks extend across the length and breadth of India.
  • The interconnected sacred sites create a sacred geography.
  • As a result, the land itself comes to be regarded as sacred.
  • Pilgrims travelling across India experience different languages, customs, clothing and foods.
  • At the same time, they discover many cultural similarities.
  • Thus, sacred geography contributes to cultural unity and integration.

Char Dham

  • Char Dham means the four major Hindu pilgrimage centres.
  • These four sacred sites are located in different directions of India.
  • Their locations cover the northern, southern, eastern and western parts of the country.
  • The tradition of Char Dham encourages pilgrims to travel across India.
  • Such journeys helped people develop a sense of geographical and cultural connection.

12 Jyotirlingas

  • There are 12 Jyotirlingas regarded as highly auspicious sacred sites.
  • They are sacred shrines dedicated to Shiva.
  • Each Jyotirlinga has its own name and mythology.
  • The Jyotirlingas are spread across different parts of India.
  • Their network encourages pilgrimage across different regions.

51 Shakti Pīṭhas

  • The 51 Shakti Pīṭhas form another important sacred network.
  • They cover different parts of the Indian Subcontinent.
  • Some of these sacred sites are located in present-day Bangladesh and Pakistan.
  • According to the traditional story, the Shakti Pīṭhas are places where parts of the body of the divine mother Satī fell.
  • The story symbolically represents the entire land as the body of the divine mother.
  • Thus, the whole land acquires sacred significance.

Pilgrimage and Cultural Integration

  • Pilgrims travelling to sacred places cover large parts of India.
  • They meet people belonging to different regions and communities.
  • They encounter different languages, customs, clothing and food.
  • They also notice similarities in beliefs, traditions and practices.
  • Merchants travelled to exchange goods.
  • Teachers and scholars travelled to discuss, debate and learn.
  • People travelling for different purposes often used the same routes.
  • Ideas, goods, stories and experiences were exchanged along these routes.
  • New ideas emerged and older ideas were adapted.
  • This process contributed greatly to the cultural integration of the Indian Subcontinent.

Sacred Ecology

Sacred Ecology refers to the close relationship between geography, culture, spirituality and Nature.

  • Tīrthas are commonly located near rivers, lakes, forests or mountains.
  • Because of this, natural landscapes themselves may be regarded as sacred spaces.
  • Such sacred spaces are also called punyakshetra.
  • The idea of sacred ecology creates a close relationship between human beings and Nature.
  • People may protect natural resources because they consider them sacred.
  • Geography, culture and spirituality therefore become closely connected.
  • Sacred ecology can contribute to environmental protection.

Rivers and Sangams

  • Rivers have been worshipped in India since Vedic times.
  • The Nadīstuti Sūkta of the Rigveda is a hymn in praise of rivers.
  • It invokes 19 major rivers of ancient northwestern India.
  • Many important rivers are invoked in traditional water-related rituals.
  • Important rivers include Ganga, Yamuna, Godavari, Sarasvati, Narmada, Sindhu and Kaveri.
  • Rivers have been lifelines of Indian civilisation.
  • Their sources, tributaries and places through which they flow may also be regarded as sacred.
  • Many pilgrims visit sacred rivers and their associated places.
  • Rivers are often addressed respectfully, such as Ganga ji and Yamuna ji.

Sangam

Sangam means the confluence or meeting point of two or more rivers.

  • River confluences are considered sacred in many Indian traditions.
  • People visit these places for pilgrimage and religious activities.
  • Prayagraj is famous for the confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna and the invisible Sarasvati.
  • The confluence at Prayagraj is traditionally called Prayag.

Kumbh Mela

  • Kumbh Mela is one of India's major pilgrimage gatherings.
  • Prayagraj hosts the Kumbh Mela every six years.
  • The Kumbh Mela is associated with the confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna and invisible Sarasvati at Prayagraj.
  • The Kumbh Mela originates in the traditional story of amṛita manthana.
  • According to the story, devas and asuras churned the cosmic ocean to obtain amṛita, the divine nectar.
  • Vishnu, in the form of Mohini, took the pitcher containing the nectar.
  • According to tradition, drops of amṛita fell at four places.
  • These four places are Haridwar, Prayagraj, Nashik and Ujjain.
  • A dip in the rivers at these places during the prescribed period is considered highly auspicious.
  • UNESCO has listed the Kumbh Mela as an intangible heritage of the world.

Mountains and Forests

  • Mountains are associated with legends, deities and heroes in many cultures.
  • Because of their great height, mountains may be viewed as symbolic gateways from Earth to heaven.
  • Many Indian tīrthas and temples are located on hilltops and mountains.
  • The physical journey to a mountain shrine may symbolise a spiritual journey towards the divine.
  • Traditional pilgrims often walked through difficult mountain trails.
  • Such journeys tested both physical ability and mental strength.
  • Today many mountain sacred sites can be reached through roads and other means of transport.
  • Examples of sacred mountain sites include Vaishno Devi, Tirumala Hills, Mount Kailash and Tiruvannamalai.

Trees and Sacred Traditions

  • Trees have an important place in India's cultural and sacred geography.
  • In many regions, trees are decorated with offerings such as turmeric and kumkum.
  • The peepul, also called pipal, bo tree or bodhi tree, is especially sacred.
  • Its Sanskrit name is ashvattha.
  • Its botanical name is Ficus religiosa.
  • The peepul is sacred to Hinduism, Buddhism, Sikhism and Jainism.
  • The tree at the Mahabodhi Temple at Bodh Gaya is traditionally regarded as a descendant of the original tree under which the Buddha attained enlightenment.
  • The peepul tree has been an important part of India's cultural geography for thousands of years.
  • Different parts of the tree have traditional medicinal uses.
  • The tree remains green for much of the year.
  • It provides food and shelter to many birds and other animals.

Mahābhārata and Rāmāyaṇa in Local Traditions

  • The Mahābhārata and Rāmāyaṇa contain descriptions of pilgrimages and sacred places.
  • They describe sacred rivers, forests and mountains.
  • Many rural and tribal communities have local traditions about the heroes of these epics passing through their regions.
  • Shrines are often associated with places connected with these stories.
  • Such local legends allowed diverse communities to make the two epics part of their own traditions.
  • This helped create connections between local cultures and wider Indian traditions.

Sacred Groves

Sacred groves are natural forests or woodland patches protected because they are considered sacred.

  • Many rural and tribal communities have traditionally protected sacred forests.
  • Hunting, tree cutting and mining may be prohibited in such forests.
  • These forests are often regarded as the abodes of deities.
  • For example, Ryngkew or Basa is associated with sacred groves in Meghalaya.
  • The sacred status of these forests helps protect biodiversity.
  • Sacred groves provide shelter to many species of plants and animals.
  • Many sacred groves contain small water bodies.
  • They therefore also contribute to water conservation.
  • India once had many thousands of sacred groves.
  • The number of sacred groves has decreased because of encroachment for agriculture and industry.
  • Many sacred groves are still protected in different parts of India.

Sacred Groves and Ecosystem

  • Sacred groves create a harmonious relationship between people, deities and Nature.
  • They protect plants, animals and water resources.
  • In Tamil Nadu, local traditions connect sacred grove deities with Nature and human beings.
  • Some groves protect fruit bats regarded as sacred.
  • Bats also help in pollination and seed dispersal.
  • Thus sacred beliefs can contribute to the protection of ecosystems.

From Pilgrimage to Trade

  • Pilgrims often meet traders and merchants during their journeys.
  • Pilgrims require food, clothing, religious objects and other goods.
  • Traders provide these goods and services.
  • Therefore, pilgrimage routes and trade routes often overlap.
  • Some traders also travelled as pilgrims.
  • They carried goods to distant towns and cities while visiting sacred places.
  • Pilgrimage therefore contributed to the economic life of different regions.

Ancient Trade Routes

  • Uttarapatha was a major trade route connecting the northwestern and eastern parts of the Indian Subcontinent.
  • Dakṣhināpatha ran from Kauśhāmbī through Ujjayinī (Ujjain) to Pratiṣhṭhāna (Paithan).
  • These routes connected different towns and regions.
  • Goods transported through these routes included shells, pearls, gold, diamonds and coins.
  • Cotton, spices and sandalwood were also traded.
  • Trade and pilgrimage networks sometimes overlapped.
  • This overlap encouraged movement of people, goods and ideas.

Sacred Geography and Cultural Integration

  • Pilgrimage routes connected distant regions of India.
  • Trade routes connected towns, cities and markets.
  • Teachers, scholars, merchants and pilgrims travelled along many of these routes.
  • They exchanged ideas, goods, stories and experiences.
  • Different communities interacted with one another.
  • New ideas emerged and older traditions were adapted.
  • This interaction helped in the cultural integration of the Indian Subcontinent.
  • Sacred geography therefore had social, cultural and economic significance.

Sacred Geography and Sustainability

  • The relationship between people and sacred geography helped sustain Indian civilisation for millennia.
  • It created values shared across different parts of the Subcontinent.
  • Today this relationship is under pressure because of pollution, overexploitation and uncontrolled development.
  • Rivers may be overexploited or polluted.
  • Sacred mountains may face pressure from development activities.
  • People have often spoken up to protect Nature, their deities and their cultural values.
  • Sacred geography remains relevant in the modern world.
  • It can contribute to the global goal of sustainability.

Protection of Sacred Places

  • Sacred places are part of India's natural and cultural heritage.
  • Pollution and neglect can damage sacred places.
  • Encroachment can threaten sacred groves and natural landscapes.
  • Protecting sacred rivers, forests and mountains is important for future generations.
  • Respect for sacred Nature can encourage responsible use of natural resources.
  • Protection of national heritage is also a responsibility of citizens.
