कर्निन्घम का भ्रम (Cunningham’s Misconception):

अलेक्ज़ेंडर कर्निन्घम (Alexander Cunningham) भारत के पहले पुरातत्व सर्वेक्षक (Archaeological Survey of India – ASI) थे।

19वीं शताब्दी में उन्होंने कई स्थलों की खुदाई करवाई।

जब उन्हें हड़प्पा स्थल से मुहरें (seals) मिलीं, जिन पर अजीब-सी आकृतियाँ और लिखावट थी, तो उन्होंने मान लिया कि ये 1000 ई.पू. के आसपास की "शक" (Saka) युग या फिर गुप्तकालीन अवशेष हैं।

उनका यह मानना इस वजह से था कि उन्हें इन स्थलों का असली प्राचीन महत्व (2600–1900 BCE) समझ में नहीं आया।
👉 भ्रम का कारण: उस समय कोई भी यह सोच ही नहीं पाया था कि भारत में मेसोपोटामिया जैसी एक प्राचीन नगरीय सभ्यता भी रही होगी।
👉 बाद में 1920 के दशक में आर.डी. बनर्जी और दयाराम साहनी की खुदाई से यह साबित हुआ कि ये स्थल हड़प्पा सभ्यता के थे, जो कर्निन्घम की सोच से कहीं अधिक प्राचीन निकले।
