उत्तर: कई करोड़ो वाली यह योजना गंगा नदी के प्रदूषित होने से बचाने के लिए 1985 में लायी गयी थी| 2500 km लंबी प्रवाह के दौरान, हिमालय में गंगोत्री से लेकर बंगाल की खाड़ी में गंगा सागर तक, इसमें प्रतिदिन विभिन्न औद्योगिक कचरों की एक विशाल मात्रा इसमें छोड़ी जाती हैं| यह मात्रा इतनी अधिक हैं कि नदी के एक बड़े क्षेत्र में पानी के जहरीले होने के कारण बड़ी संख्यां में मछलियाँ मर जाती हैं| इस महत्वकांक्षी परियोजना को नदी को और अधिक संदूषित होने से बचाने के लिए लाया गया|
