NCERT Textbook Questions & Answers

The following questions are based on the poem Fire and Ice by Robert Frost. Read the questions carefully and understand the symbolic meaning of fire and ice in the poem.

Thinking About the Poem

Question 1. There are many ideas about how the world will ‘end’. Do you think the world will end some day? Have you ever thought what would happen if the sun got so hot that it ‘burst’, or grew colder and colder?

Answer:

Many people have different beliefs about how the world may end. Some believe it could happen because of natural disasters, while others think it may result from human actions. In the poem, Robert Frost presents a symbolic view rather than a scientific explanation. He suggests that the world could end because of destructive human emotions such as uncontrolled desire or hatred. If the sun became extremely hot or extremely cold, life on Earth would become impossible. The poem reminds us that our actions and emotions can be as destructive as natural forces.

Question 2. For Frost, what do ‘fire’ and ‘ice’ stand for? Here are some ideas:

Answer:

According to Robert Frost, fire symbolises uncontrolled desires, greed, passion, ambition, and selfishness. These emotions often lead to conflict, violence, and destruction. On the other hand, ice symbolises hatred, cruelty, indifference, coldness, and lack of compassion. The poet believes that both desire and hatred are powerful enough to destroy the world because they weaken human relationships and disturb peace in society.

Question 3. What is the rhyme scheme of the poem? How does it help in bringing out the contrasting ideas in the poem?

Answer:

The rhyme scheme of the poem is ABAABCBCB. The carefully arranged rhyme pattern gives the poem a smooth and balanced flow. It also highlights the contrast between the two opposite ideas—fire and ice. By connecting words such as fire–desire and ice–suffice, the rhyme scheme reinforces the poet's message that both desire and hatred are equally capable of bringing destruction.
