Earth as a System
What is the Earth System?
The Earth System is a dynamic and interconnected system in which the geosphere, hydrosphere, cryosphere, atmosphere and biosphere continuously interact. A change in one sphere affects the functioning of the other spheres.

Interaction Among Earth's Spheres
All five spheres are closely connected and continuously exchange matter and energy.
- Rainfall transfers water from the atmosphere to the hydrosphere and geosphere.
- Plants absorb water and minerals from the geosphere and hydrosphere.
- Living organisms exchange gases with the atmosphere.
- Melting glaciers add water to rivers and oceans.
- Volcanic eruptions release gases and materials into the atmosphere.
Flow of Energy in the Earth System
Energy continuously flows through the Earth System and drives almost all natural processes.

Cycling of Matter
