Asexual Reproduction in Organisms
Budding
Budding is a type of asexual reproduction in which a small outgrowth called a bud develops on the parent body. The bud grows, matures and finally separates to form a new individual.
Characteristics of Budding
- A new individual develops from a bud.
- Only one parent is involved.
- The offspring are genetically identical to the parent.
- The bud separates after complete development.
Examples of Budding
- Yeast
- Hydra
Difference Between Budding in Yeast and Hydra

Spore Formation
Spore formation is a method of asexual reproduction in fungi. Tiny spores are produced inside sac-like structures. Under favourable conditions, spores germinate to form new organisms.
Characteristics of Spores
- Produced in very large numbers.
- Lightweight and easily dispersed by air.
- Usually single-celled.
- Remain dormant under unfavourable conditions.
- Germinate when moisture and nutrients are available.
Examples of Spore Formation
- Rhizopus (Bread Mould)
- Aspergillus
- Many other fungi
Importance of Spore Formation
- Rapid multiplication of fungi.
- Easy dispersal over long distances.
- Helps organisms survive adverse conditions.
- Ensures continuation of the species.
Mitosis and Asexual Reproduction
The basic process behind asexual reproduction is mitosis. During mitosis, one parent cell divides to form two genetically identical daughter cells having the same chromosome number as the parent cell.
Role of Mitosis
- Produces genetically identical cells.
- Maintains the chromosome number.
- Supports growth and tissue repair.
- Forms identical offspring during asexual reproduction.
Clones
Clones are genetically identical individuals produced through asexual reproduction by mitosis.
Sexual Reproduction
Sexual reproduction involves two parents. The offspring inherit genetic material from both parents, producing variation among individuals.
Need for Meiosis
- Prevents doubling of chromosome number in every generation.
- Produces haploid gametes.
- Maintains the chromosome number of the species.
- Creates genetic variation among offspring.
