Chapter 5. Exploring Mixtures and their Separation

This section introduces pure substances and mixtures, explains their characteristics, classification and importance, and helps students understand why different methods are required to separate the components of a mixture.

1. Pure Substance

Everything around us is made of matter. Some materials consist of only one kind of particles and possess a fixed composition throughout. Such materials are known as pure substances.

Definition

A pure substance is a material that contains only one kind of particles and has a fixed composition and definite properties.

Characteristics of Pure Substances

  • Single Type of Particle – Contains only one kind of atom or molecule.
  • Fixed Composition – The composition remains the same throughout.
  • Uniform Properties – Physical and chemical properties are constant.
  • Cannot be Separated Physically – Physical methods cannot separate its components.

Examples

  • Distilled Water
  • Pure Gold
  • Pure Copper
  • Oxygen Gas

2. Mixture

Most substances found in nature are mixtures. A mixture is formed when two or more substances are combined physically without undergoing a chemical reaction.

Definition

A mixture is a physical combination of two or more substances in any proportion, where each substance retains its own properties.

Characteristics of Mixtures

  • Physical Combination – No new substance is formed.
  • Variable Composition – Components may be present in any proportion.
  • Components Retain Their Properties – Each substance behaves independently.
  • Can be Separated Physically – Separation is possible using suitable physical methods.

  • Air
  • Salt Solution
  • Soil
  • Milk
  • Lemon Juice

3. Difference Between Pure Substance and Mixture

Pure Substance Mixture
Contains only one kind of particle. Contains two or more substances.
Fixed composition. Variable composition.
Properties remain constant. Properties depend on the components.
Cannot be separated by physical methods. Can be separated by physical methods.
Example: Distilled Water. Example: Salt Solution.

4. Classification of Mixtures

Mixtures are classified according to the uniformity of the distribution of their components.

Types of Mixtures

  • Homogeneous Mixture
  • Heterogeneous Mixture

5. Homogeneous Mixture

In a homogeneous mixture, all the components are uniformly distributed throughout the mixture. Every part of the mixture has the same composition.

Definition

A homogeneous mixture is a mixture having uniform composition throughout.

Characteristics

  • Uniform Appearance – Looks the same throughout.
  • Single Phase – Components cannot be distinguished.
  • Stable Mixture – Components remain evenly mixed.

Examples

  • Salt in Water
  • Sugar Solution
  • Air
  • Vinegar

6. Heterogeneous Mixture

In a heterogeneous mixture, the components are not distributed uniformly. Different components can usually be seen separately.

Definition

A heterogeneous mixture is a mixture having a non-uniform composition.

Characteristics

  • Non-uniform Composition – Composition differs from one part to another.
  • More Than One Phase – Different components are visible.
  • Easy Physical Separation – Components can often be separated easily.

Examples

  • Oil and Water
  • Sand and Water
  • Soil
  • Granite

7. Difference Between Homogeneous and Heterogeneous Mixtures

Homogeneous Mixture Heterogeneous Mixture
Uniform composition. Non-uniform composition.
Single phase. Two or more phases.
Components are not visible. Components are visible.
Difficult to distinguish components. Components can be distinguished easily.
Example: Salt Solution. Example: Sand and Water.

8. Why Do We Separate Mixtures?

Mixtures are separated to obtain useful substances, remove harmful impurities and improve the quality of materials used in daily life and industries.

Importance of Separation

  • Removal of Impurities – Makes substances safe for use.
  • Obtaining Pure Substances – Required in laboratories and industries.
  • Recovery of Valuable Materials – Prevents wastage of useful substances.
  • Improves Quality – Produces better food, medicines and chemicals.

Daily Life Examples

  • Removing Stones from Rice
  • Filtering Tea
  • Purifying Drinking Water
  • Separating Butter from Curd
