Chapter 3: Electric Circuits and Their Components

Definitions:

Electric Current: Electric current is the flow of electric charges through a conductor.

Electric Circuit: An electric circuit is a closed path through which electric current flows.

Cell: A cell is a device that provides electrical energy to a circuit.

Battery: A battery is a combination of two or more cells connected together.

Switch: A switch is a device used to open or close a circuit.

Open Circuit: An open circuit is a circuit in which the path is broken and current does not flow.

Closed Circuit: A closed circuit is a circuit in which the path is complete and current flows.

Conductor: A conductor is a material that allows electric current to pass through it.

Insulator: An insulator is a material that does not allow electric current to pass through it.

Heating Effect of Current: The production of heat when electric current flows through a conductor is called heating effect.

Electric Fuse: A fuse is a safety device that protects circuits by breaking them when excess current flows.

Short Circuit: A short circuit occurs when current flows through an unintended path with very low resistance.

Quick Revision Points:

  • Electric current flows only in a closed circuit.
  • A cell provides electrical energy.
  • A battery is made up of multiple cells.
  • A switch controls the flow of current.
  • Conductors allow current to pass, insulators do not.
  • Heating effect produces heat in appliances like heaters and irons.
  • Fuse protects devices from excess current.
  • Short circuit can cause damage or fire.
  • Electric circuits are used in all electrical devices.
  • Safety measures are important while using electricity.
