Chapter 12: Earth, Moon and the Sun

Definitions:

Rotation: Rotation is the movement of the Earth on its axis.

Revolution: Revolution is the movement of the Earth around the Sun in its orbit.

Axis: Axis is an imaginary line passing through the centre of the Earth.

Orbit: Orbit is the path followed by the Earth while revolving around the Sun.

Day and Night: Day and night are caused due to the rotation of the Earth.

Seasons: Seasons are caused due to the tilt of the Earth’s axis and its revolution around the Sun.

Satellite: A satellite is a body that revolves around a planet.

Moon: The Moon is the natural satellite of the Earth.

Phases of the Moon: The different shapes of the Moon seen from Earth are called phases of the Moon.

Constellation: A constellation is a group of stars forming a pattern in the sky.

Pole Star: The Pole Star is a star that appears fixed in the sky and helps in finding direction.

Solar Eclipse: A solar eclipse occurs when the Moon comes between the Earth and the Sun.

Lunar Eclipse: A lunar eclipse occurs when the Earth comes between the Sun and the Moon.
