These notes explain the different forms of economic activities, value addition, ways of receiving payment, and the importance of non-economic activities and community participation.

Types of Economic Activities

Economic activities are activities that have value in terms of money. People may receive different forms of payment for the work they perform.

Salary

A salary is a fixed and regular payment generally paid monthly by an employer to an employee.

Example: A technician working in a construction company receives a monthly salary.

Wage

A wage is a payment made by an employer to a worker for a specific period of time.

Example: A farm labourer may receive a daily wage for working on a farmer's land.

Example: A person conducting online classes may charge a weekly fee.

Payment in Kind

Payment in kind is a non-cash payment received for work performed.

Example: A farm labourer may receive part of the payment in the form of mangoes instead of cash.

Value Addition

Value addition means adding value to something by transforming it into another form.

Economic activities add value at different stages of a process.

Example of Value Addition

  • Cost of wood = ₹600
  • Selling price of chair = ₹1,000
