Chapter 1. The Rise of Nationalism in Europe

During the second half of the nineteenth century, nationalism became the strongest political force in Europe. It led to the successful unification of Italy and Germany, while the Balkan region became a centre of conflict because of competing nationalist movements. These developments completely changed the political map of Europe.

This part explains the unification of Italy and Germany, the role of major leaders, and the rise of nationalism in the Balkan region.

Unification of Italy

Italy was divided into several states before its unification. The nationalist movement successfully united these states into one nation.

  1. Sardinia-Piedmont became the centre of the unification movement.
  2. Count Camillo de Cavour led the political movement.
  3. Giuseppe Garibaldi led revolutionary forces in southern Italy.
  4. Giuseppe Mazzini inspired people with nationalist ideas.
  5. In 1861, Victor Emmanuel II became the King of unified Italy.
  6. Italy emerged as a modern nation-state.

Role of Count Camillo de Cavour

Cavour played a leading role in the political unification of Italy.

  5. His diplomatic efforts made Italian unification possible.

Role of Giuseppe Garibaldi

Garibaldi was the military leader of the Italian nationalist movement.

Unification of Germany

Germany was divided into 39 independent states before its unification.

  2. Otto von Bismarck was the Chief Minister of Prussia.
  3. He followed the policy of "Blood and Iron".
  4. Three wars helped unite the German states.
  5. In 1871, Germany became a unified nation.
  6. The German Empire was proclaimed at the Palace of Versailles.

Role of Otto von Bismarck

Otto von Bismarck was the chief architect of German unification.

  1. He believed in military strength and practical politics.
  2. He defeated Denmark, Austria, and France.
  3. He united the German states under Prussian leadership.
  4. He established a strong German Empire.
  5. He became the first Chancellor of unified Germany.

The Balkan Region

The Balkan region became one of the most unstable areas of Europe during the nineteenth century.

  1. The region included modern-day Greece, Serbia, Romania, Bulgaria, and neighbouring areas.
  2. Most Balkan states were under the control of the Ottoman Empire.
  3. Different ethnic groups demanded independence.
  4. Nationalist movements increased political tensions.
  5. European powers competed for influence in the region.

Causes of Balkan Nationalism

Several factors contributed to the rise of nationalism in the Balkans.

  1. The decline of the Ottoman Empire.
  2. The desire for independent nation-states.
  3. Growth of ethnic and cultural identity.
  4. Interference of powerful European countries.
  5. Competition for territory and political influence.

Impact of Nationalism in Europe

Nationalism reshaped the political structure of Europe and influenced many future movements.
