Finite and Non-finite Verbs

 

Classification

 

Non-Finites: 


There are three kinds of non-finite verbs:

(1) Infinitive : There are two kinds of infinitives.

   (a) To Infinitive : (to + Verb1)

   Examples: to go, to play, to run, to watch, to help, to love, to meet, to bake, to write, to eat, to see, to keep, to hide, to give etc. 

   (b) Bare Infinitive : (Verb without to)

   Examples: go, run, play, watch, see, keep, wish, need, hit, give, pray etc. 

(2) Gerund : Verb1 + ing

   Examples: running, watching, giving, helping, praying, wishing, writing, smoking etc. 

(3) Participle : There are three kinds of participles: 

   (a) Present Participle : Verb1 + ing

   Examples: running, watching, giving, helping, praying, wishing, writing, smoking etc. 

   (b) Past Participle : Verb3

   Examples: given, taken, writen, hidden, seen, made, broken, laid, died, brought etc. 

   (c) Perfect Participle : Having + verb3​ 

   Examples: Having gone, having waited, having seen, having eaten, having taken etc.
